Sea Dreams Cottage

Houses are one of my favorite motifs for mixed-media art, so I was very excited when I learned that the theme for the Spring 2014 issue of Altered Arts Magazine was Homes and Abodes! I've always dreamed about living in a little cottage by the sea, so I decided to create a mixed-media assemblage using Sea Dreams Cottage as my theme.

Here's a little glimpse of the project while it was still a work in progress. I started with an unfinished wooden house from the craft store.  Color Wash papers from Pink Paislee provided the perfect backgrounds for a painterly pink-washed sky, blue seas, and soft green sea cliffs.

I used snippets of my favorite fabrics and vintage trims to create the scenery, and vintage buttons from my stash for the finishing touches. I thought the watercolor vellum banners from Pink Paislee looked so coastal and charming!

If you haven't ordered your copy of the Spring 2014 issue of Altered Arts Magazine, you can do so here. You'll be so inspired by the beautiful projects inside!
Happy altering!

Letters Home--a closer look

Did you see the Letters Home book in the Spring 2014 issue of Altered Arts Magazine?  It was the first time I've made this type of altered book;  it was a little different for me.

It's a book with a niche full up of simply bound tiny books, and as the piece is entitled "Letters Home," all of the enclosed booklets contain images and proverbs or sayings pertaining to home.  Here is a closer look at some of the booklets:

Each of the enclosed booklets has tags/charms/found items attached at the outer spine.

Been working on my lettering--can you tell??
Happy Thursday, everyone!

Homes and Abodes

The new Spring 2014 issue of Altered Arts Magazine is available NOW and I am honored to be featured on the cover!!! For this issue focusing on Homes and Abodes I created this fun house from an altered box! I wanted to share with you some of the features :

Embossed and shaped die cuts enhance the base of the box.

Foam blocks were carved and covered to emulate painted brick accents.
Blocks were left raw and colored with chalk to give the impression of raw brick. Tiles were created with embossed brown paper sack!

This makes the perfect place to hide little treasures on a bookshelf! Check out the complete article in the current issue available HERE!

ATCs TO SWAP

You know that I join the WOYWW party every week.  In a few weeks, it will be the 5 year anniversary of this wonderful weekly event! We  will be having a global ATC swap for the occasion!  I will send my 1 *which is all I have  to do* and some more to other friends.
I went to the Altered Arts Magazine sponsor box of goodies and got busy!

I started with my 7gypsies Collage tissue and some Mod Podge.  I applied the Mod Podge to the ATC blank and laid the tissue on top carefully.  Then I layered some 7gypsies paper, that I ripped to make it more interesting.  I used 7gypsies stamps "Numero" and Pink Paislee stamps too.  Of course, gauze and rope finished them off.

I can't wait to send them out!

A Pattern for Love Journal Page

Good afternoon! leslierahye here to share with you this fun journal page entitled A Pattern for LOVE. I layered pattern paper from a vintage pattern onto my K & P Imports art journal. I layered colors onto my tissue papers and Pink Paislee  Tag with Rangers Dylusions Ink Spray and Tattered Angels Mist. With Prima's Raspberry Red Chalk Ink, I edged the tag and the page and then sprinkled with gold embossing powder and heat set. Next I adhered the tag and some tape onto the page. I finished the page by doodling and writing little quips that provide advice for lovesuch as Be Kind.

a "love"ly collage . . .

Sorry, yes, I know, bad pun--but it's February now, and I'm thinking
of Valentines (and warmer weather) . . .

Now here's the question--make this a card front, or turn it into a hanging?
It's only 5 by 8 inches, so either way . . . what do you think?

Have a wonderful, creative Saturday, everyone!

Le Pot de Papillon

Good afternoon! leslierahye here with an altered coaster : Le Pot de Papillonthe butterfly jar! As an artist one of my favorite things to do is to upcycle cardboard--coasters from restaurants are perfect! Many are about the size of a fat book (4×4") and make wonderful substrates for small art.

I covered this coaster with 2 layers of Kraft colored Tissue Stock from Canvas Corp using Nori Perfect Paste as my adhesive. I also used the Nori Perfect Paste to adhere the trimmed "La Fleur" mason jar from the Retro Cafe Art Gallery collage sheet.

I created handmade flowers with the soft subtle Color Wash card stock from Pink Paislee and adhered them to the side of the jar image. I completed the composition by posing mini butterflies in the jar and upon a few flowers. Knotted Wood ink from Prima Marketing Inc. was edged around the coaster to darken the edge a bit.
